About Last Night

Well, here we are.

As someone who unfortunately lives in a MAGA pocket of Los Angeles County, I’m numb but not surprised.

I’ve seen so much of this in my local ecosystem over the past decade, but I think that seeing it at full country scale last night really cemented for me some current truths about a majority of 2024 America:

  • Deep down, we’re never handing over power to a woman (to say nothing of letting them control their own bodies). I should not have been surprised by this given my time in evangelical circles, but it was still a very painful reminder.
  • We’ve been racist to the core since founding, and we remain so. It’s absolutely not a dealbreaker, and is in fact a feature, not a bug.
  • In 2016, information ecosystems could be partially blamed for the rise of Trump. In 2024, it’s clear that we aren’t confused or duped, but we actively understand and in fact crave his agenda.
  • We care only about protecting ourselves and our immediate family. The death of some trans kids is absolutely worth it if we can save a little more at the pump. Same with ongoing mass shootings, they’re a fine tradeoff vs. even minor new gun control laws.

I’ll share more thoughts soon on where those of us who care to resist might go from here, but until then, let’s just sit with the reality of who we are. No looking away.
